This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Stanley Kubrick's science fiction masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. Since, this was the 50th Anniversary to 2001: A Space Odyssey the film was giving an IMAX release for only one week. Seeing this film in IMAX was an experience of a lifetime. This movie definitely deserved to have an IMAX release. I remember when I first watched 2001, and I remember thinking to myself that it was boring as can be, and that it was too long of a movie. But when it comes to most film lovers we always have a story to tell about what it was like experiencing this movie for the first time. Maybe some people had a different experience than others, but most people have had the same experience the first time around. When I knew that this year marked the 50th anniversary of this film, I was excited because I knew that it was going to get some kind of special release. First, this film was released at the Cannes Film Festival with director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk) presenting the movie because this movie was one of the few films that inspired him to be filmmaker, he showed everyone the version of 2001: A Space Odyssey that he saw in theaters. So at the Cannes Film Festival people got to see the 70mm unrestored version of 2001. After the movie was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, IMAX announced that they were going to be releasing 2001: A Space Odyssey in IMAX for one week only, and with that some theaters that have IMAX 70mm got to see the film in IMAX while also seeing the 70mm unrestored version as well. But for me, I saw it in IMAX, and all I will say is what an experience that was. No other movie will give you the experience like 2001 will in IMAX. When seeing this movie today it just amazes me to see how far ahead Stanley Kubrick was during his time. The way everything looks on screen is breathtaking, and when it comes to the final scene in IMAX, you will be on the edge of your seat experiencing something that you will never forget.
